The COTA Research Series is a collection of friendly afternoon gatherings to introduce COTA faculty, students, and staff to research resources across UF, expand our skills in pursuing internal and external fellowships/grants/residencies for creative and scholarly research, and celebrate research happening across our college. Interested in applying for an arts residency, but don’t know where to start? This information session and Q&A provides basic information on residencies. Our panelists are faculty who have recently participated in place-based artistic residencies. Hear from them about the value of a residency, their application processes and experiences, and tips for applying and making the most of a residency. We are also joined by the Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE). Programs Manager Kristina Reinis to discuss AIRIE’s residency program providing artists the opportunity to live and work inside Everglades National Park. Join us to learn more about making time and space for your creative work and opportunities to connect to local and national communities around the country through a residency.

Every year, the UF Office of Research issues the Research Opportunity Seed Fund, a $100,000 internal funding opportunity to kick-start new, collaborative creative and scholarly research projects. COTA may advance one proposal to the university-level competition.

The COTA Proposal Studio has hosted an informational session with Dr. Claire Anumba (UF International Center Office of Global Research Engagement) and Kelly J. Medley (University Office of Prestigious Awards) and three COTA Fulbright awardees: Anna Callouri-Holcombe (Art + Art History), Heidi Powell (Art + Art History), and Cody Lee Case (Music). This session will provide information about general UF International Center support for your research, different Fulbright funding opportunities, and guidance on applying for Fulbright funding to support your international creative and scholarly research.
What is the COTA Scholarship Enhancement Fund (SEF) Award? What is the COTA Research Incentive Award? How can you use these sources of college-level funding to support your larger research and creative trajectory?

In today’s super-connected world, your online presence as a researcher is an important part of how people access and share your work. In this workshop, we’ll discuss why your online research profile matters and show you how you can manage it. You’ll learn how to get an ORCID number (required for some grant applications) and how to connect your ORCID strategically with Wikipedia, Humanities Commons, and other third-party platforms to ensure your digital presence is always accurate and always points to you. In addition, this workshop will share tips for using Dimensions Analytics and Altmetric Explorer, two new databases to explore collaborations, funders, and research impacts through publications, grants, policy documents, news, and social media

UF maintains institutional membership in two national consortia that support arts, design, and humanities at research universities: Imagining America and the Alliance for the Arts at Research Universities (a2ru). Both organizations drive institutional change in higher education through fore fronting the creative and cultural disciplines, fostering innovative and generative scholarship and teaching, and supporting community-engaged work. This session will provide a short overview of both organizations, share out new information and resources from UF participants in the October 2023 national convenings, and talk about how artists, designers, and scholars can make the most of these memberships to support their work and their students.

What is a grant? What is a fellowship? What is a residency? Where can you locate external grants, fellowships, and residencies to support your work? This information session will provide a basic introduction to locating internal and external research funding, as well as tips for reading funding opportunity guidelines to find the right match for your work. If you are curious about how to begin looking for funding, start here.
You’ve found a grant or other funding opportunity for your work – now what? This information session will discuss the path from idea to proposal submission. This includes: identifying how to apply (through UF or as an individual), deciding if the funding opportunity is a good fit, discussing research and teaching commitments with your Director, and working with assistance from the COTA Proposal Studio to develop and submit a competitive proposal. In this session, you’ll learn some foundational grants language and see how the COTA Proposal Studio and UF Office of Research helps you to develop your proposals and manage your award funding.
How can you begin the process of preparing to apply for external fellowships, grants, and residencies at UF? This workshop will provide a basic introduction to the landscape of resources at UF for locating and applying for funding, as well as beginner’s tips for reading funding opportunity guidelines and preparing a funding proposal.
If you are curious about how to begin this process, start here. This informal event – part presentation, part Q&A, and part conversation – will form the foundation for a series of proposal development workshops in Spring 2022.

What’s all the hype about HiPerGator? The High-Performance Gator or HiPerGator is one of the world’s fastest super computers located right here on campus and it just received an update! Listen to Jack Stenner in this recorded workshop to learn more about HiPerGator and what it can do for you as you navigate school and conduct research in the arts.
If your research involves humans, when do you work with the IRB? How do you get IRB approval? And how is IRB at UF changing? (Spoiler Alert: It’s being simplified.) This information session and Q&A provides a basic introduction to IRB, as well as tips on how and when to use it in the arts. If you are curious about IRB, or even a frequent user, join COTA, Michael Mahoney and Dr. Ivana Simic (Office of Research), and Dr. Heidi Powell (Art + Art History) to learn about the rights and welfare of human research participants.
We create research, creative works, and diverse forms of creative scholarship, including teaching, databases, white papers, etc. How can UF help us to protect and disseminate these products? We’ll be joined by Dr. Hera Lichtenbeld (Assistant Director of UF INNOVATE Tech Licensing) and Perry Collins (Copyright & Open Educational Resources Librarian of the UF George A. Smathers Libraries). Hera will share with us how UF Tech Licensing works with faculty to protect research and move ideas from research into market to make the world better. Perry will share an overview of where the Libraries can support when it comes to rights-related issues in publishing, leveraging fair use, and open licensing in research.
