Office of Research Graduate Student Research Travel funding request:
We encourage you to seek additional research travel support from the University of Florida Office of Research. This support is most commonly limited to those in the research stage – post qualifying and comprehensive exams – of a terminal degree program.
Please ensure that you are eligible before completing the application for this competitive university level research support; eligibility criteria and application directions are included on the form. Award letters generated through Step 1 are necessary for the completion of the Office of Research application, which can be found here.
UF Funding for Graduate Research and Travel
The Madelyn Lockhart Fellowship was created to honor a PhD Candidate who is both an outstanding researcher and who has contributed to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. One Fellowship in the amount of up to $2,000 will be awarded annually to assist in the dissertation phase of the doctoral degree. The recipient must be enrolled in dissertation credits the semester (or summer) s/he receives the fellowship.
A nomination can come from a faculty member or from the candidate and the candidate can be from any PhD program.

The McKnight Doctoral Fellowship provides historically underrepresented students with a base stipend that also covers tuition, health insurance and fee waiver for a maximum of five years for a Ph.D. Applicants must be US citizens admitted to a University of Florida Ph.D. program and entering the first year of that program. Applications must be submitted directly to the Florida Education Fund before January 15 to compete for funding opportunities the following fall.
Students are not required to have admission decisions at the time of application submission.
The McNair Graduate Assistantship Program provides support for students who have successfully completed the McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program as undergraduates.
This assistantship program provides a stipend, in-state tuition, fees, and health insurance for up to 4 years for a Ph.D. or up to 3 years for an MFA degree. Each student will be appointed to a research assistant and expected to conduct research under faculty supervision.
The James W. Van Horn Music Fund is available to both undergraduate and graduate students who are working on their Masters or PhD in Music and have a proficiency in chorale singing, composing, or conducting.
The University of Florida Friends of Theatre and Dance scholarship acknowledges outstanding graduate and undergraduate students within the department of Theatre & Dance with an award amount of $750.
College of the Arts Strategic Opportunity Funding
Submit your proposals to the Community Engagement Impact Funding to support your student-led engagement project focused within Alachua County. Projects should be designed to address critical needs in the Gainesville community. Award amounts vary between $500-$2,000.
The Graduate School Doctoral Research Travel Reward provides support for research related travel expenses for PhD students primarily in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.
The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Feeder Fellowship affords FAMU students the opportunity to receive advanced study in graduate programs not available at FAMU.
UF offers five fellowships every year to qualified FAMU Feeder students who have been admitted to a Ph.D. or a terminal MFA degree program. Each fellow receives a stipend, in-state tuition, fee waiver and health insurance for up to 5 years for a Ph.D. and up to 3 years for a terminal MFA degree.
Participants of the UF/Santa Fe College Faculty Development Project teach two courses per year at SFC and assist in its recruitment and retention of minority and underrepresented students.
The program provides a stipend of $16,000 for nine months, in-state tuition, and health insurance for fall-spring semesters, with an additional amount supplied by Santa Fe. Participants must have a master’s degree in an approved field and/or have advanced to candidacy.
The Supplemental Retention Scholarship is designed for doctoral students who are three or fewer semesters away from graduation but are no longer eligible to receive a a fellowship, assistantship, or other funding from their department/college.
This award provides financial support for three credit hours in the fall and spring and two credit hours in the summer of in-state-tuition and the help of a structured retention program under the Office of Graduate Diversity Initiatives (OGDI).
The Center for Latin American Studies (LAS) sponsors the Field Research Grant Competition to support graduate student research in Latin America and the Caribbean. Awards typically range between $1,000 and $2,000. Research in the United States on a Latinx Studies topic and research in Spain or Portugal on some aspect of Latin America are also supported.
